DETAILS

The competition is open to all rums commercially available in South Africa.

The judging will be done blind. 

Judging will take place independently in Cape Town.

An experienced and knowledgeable team of  judges will make up the panel.

Results will be audited by certified auditors.

 

RULES AND ENTRY CRITERIA

 

​1. The rum has to be available for purchase in South Africa.

2. There is no limit to the number of entries per producer or distributor.​

3. Cost of entry is R1300 per rum.

4. Please indicate all applicable categories for the rum on the entry form.

5. Proof of payment confirms your entry.

6. Open for entries from Monday 12 July 2021.

7. The closing date for entries is Friday 10 September 2021.

8. For every label entered, two bottles are required for judging.

9. Deliveries: 14 & 15 September 2021.

10. Delivery details provided upon confirmation of entry.

Rum is a distilled spirit made by fermenting, then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugar cane juice.

 

It is made in over 80 countries around the world on 5 continents. The making of rum goes back many centuries and is steeped in history.

Each rum will be judged in their respective categories.

JUDGES

Leah van Deventer

 

While Leah is foremost a drinks writer and commentator – and the title holder of the South African BAR Awards Media Contributor of the Year – her expertise in all things spirits have resulted in her taking on many roles in the liquor industry, including course convenor, ambassador and consultant. Leah’s currently a global judge in the International Sugarcane Spirits Awards, the Academy Chair for Africa South for The World’s 50 Best Bars and a Spirited Awards judge for Middle East and Africa.

Kurt Schlechter

 

Kurt Schlechter, or ‘King Kurt’ as he’s known in the trade, is a highly experienced judge, educator, spirits consultant and flavour virtuoso, with nearly three decades experience in the South African drinks industry. Not only was he named one of the Bar World 100 most influential drinks industry figures for 2019, globally, but Kurt currently heads up the Bar Stars spirits training academy for Africa as well as owns and runs Cause Effect, which won Best Bar Team and Best Cocktail Bar at the 2019 South African BAR Awards. 

Bradley Jacobs

With over 12 years experience in the spirits field in SA, Bradley Jacobs is a heavy-weight when it comes to his chosen field.
Already an accomplished drinks judge, he has a particular interest in spirits and their role in world-class cocktails. In an official capacity he has travelled globally through the World Class Cocktail Competition programme. Currently he is Diageo SA’s Reserve Brand Ambassador for the Cape Region. With a keen palate for Rum he joins this year's line up of judges for the SA Rum Awards 2021.
Jean Buckham

Jean is one of the most experienced spirits judges in South Africa.
Active in the spirits and distilling industry for over 7 years, her judging experience includes the Tops at Spar Spirits Panel, the Sunday Times Lifestyle Panel and the biggest spirits competition in South Africa; the SA Craft Gin Awards.  Jean joins the SA Rum Awards Panel for the first time this year.
